Audition 2018: Hale Center Theatre – Newsies

Auditions for Newsies will be held, by appointment only, November 10th, 2018 at Hale Studios (537 N. 1200 W. in Orem).

We will begin taking audition appointments on October 31st. Appointments may be made by calling the box office at 801-226-8600. Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to fill out the appropriate paperwork before your audition time.

Please prepare 16 bars of a song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided. Headshots and resumes are encouraged. Bring your sheet music.  No minus tracks may be used.

Newsies will be directed by Lisa Hall Hagen with choreography by Ashley Gardner Carlson and music direction by Justin Bills.

Callbacks, by invitation only, are currently scheduled for Saturday, November 24th, 2018 (subject to change).

Anyone who is unable to attend the initial audition may submit an audition form and video. Please send your video along with a headshot, resume, and your audition form tomeagan@haletheater.org no later than November 9th to be considered for callbacks. Character Descriptions
(Auditions are open for Boys Ages 9-12, Men Ages 15+ & Women Ages 18+)

JACK KELLY (Male; ages 18-25): The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an oprhaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West.Vocal range: Bb2-A4

CRUTCHIE
 (Male; ages 16-25): A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful, but helps sell more papes. Though he walks with a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it define him; Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy- sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Vocal range: C3-A4

DAVEY (Male; ages 16-25): Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others. Vocal range: D3-A4

LES (Male; ages 9-12): Davey’s cheeky younger brother, is inspired by the freedom of the newsies and loves their independent lifestyle. A precocious and natural newsie, Les is an intuitive salesboy and a pint-sized charmer.Vocal range: Db3-Bb3

KATHERINE PLUMBER (Female; ages 18-25): An ambitious young reporter, works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Vocal range: A3-F5

JOSEPH PULITZER (Male; ages 35-50): A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line.Vocal range: C3-F4

MEDDA LARKIN (Female; ages 25-45): Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. Vocal range: F3-E5

SPOT CONLON (Male; ages 18-25): The proud leader of the Brooklyn newsies, boasts an intimidating reputation.

NEWSIES (Male; ages 15-25): Hard-working kids of New York City that go on strike for a livable wage.

WIESEL (Male; ages 35-60): Or “Weasel,” runs the distribution window for the World and knows most of the newsies by name.

OSCAR AND MORRIS DELANCEY (Male; ages 18-25): Tough brothers, who work at the distribution window for the World, take the side of the publishers in the strike and are known to use their fists to make a point.

SNYDER (Male; ages 35-60): The crooked and sinister warden of The Refuge, a filthy and horrible orphanage, is concerned only with catching enough kids to keep his government checks coming.

GOVERNOR TEDDY ROOSEVELT
 (Male; ages 45-65): A well-respected lifelong public servant, inspires Jack to stand up to Pulitzer.

ADULT ENSEMBLE
 (Male; ages 25+ & Female; ages 20+): The ensemble will cover the following roles: Seitz, Bunsen, Nunzio, Stage Manager, Mr. Jacobi, Mayor, Guards, Policeman, Hannah, Bowery Beauties, Nuns, etc.

Audition 2018: Hale Center Theatre – A Christmas Carol

Auditions for A Christmas Carol will be held, by appointment only, September 29th & October 1st. 
These auditions will be held at Hale Studio located at 537 N. 1200 W. in Orem. 
All roles, with the exception of Ebenezer Scrooge, are available.
Children (Ages 8-15 and Tiny Tims) may schedule appointments for September 29th from 10:00am-11:00am or October 1st from 6:00pm-7:00pm. Adults (Ages 16+) may schedule appointments for September 29th from 11:00am-1:00pm or October 1st from 7:00pm-9:00pm. 
Each “auditioner” will read one cold read monologue at the audition in a British accent.
Monologues will be provided at the auditions and can also be found online.
Adults (Ages 16+) should also prepare to sing 16 bars of a classic musical theater song. An accompanist will be provided. Headshots and resumes are encouraged.
All auditions are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance through our Box Office (801-226-8600). We will begin taking audition appointments September 15th.

Callbacks, by invitation only, are scheduled for Monday, October 8th (for non-caroler roles) and Friday, October 12th (for Carolers).
A Christmas Carol will be directed by Jerry Elison, with music direction by Sonja Sperling and choreography by Jayne Luke.
