Audition 2018: Hale Center Theatre – Newsies

Auditions for Newsies will be held, by appointment only, November 10th, 2018 at Hale Studios (537 N. 1200 W. in Orem).

We will begin taking audition appointments on October 31st. Appointments may be made by calling the box office at 801-226-8600. Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to fill out the appropriate paperwork before your audition time.

Please prepare 16 bars of a song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided. Headshots and resumes are encouraged. Bring your sheet music.  No minus tracks may be used.

Newsies will be directed by Lisa Hall Hagen with choreography by Ashley Gardner Carlson and music direction by Justin Bills.

Callbacks, by invitation only, are currently scheduled for Saturday, November 24th, 2018 (subject to change).

Anyone who is unable to attend the initial audition may submit an audition form and video. Please send your video along with a headshot, resume, and your audition form tomeagan@haletheater.org no later than November 9th to be considered for callbacks. Character Descriptions
(Auditions are open for Boys Ages 9-12, Men Ages 15+ & Women Ages 18+)

JACK KELLY (Male; ages 18-25): The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an oprhaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West.Vocal range: Bb2-A4

CRUTCHIE
 (Male; ages 16-25): A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful, but helps sell more papes. Though he walks with a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it define him; Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy- sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Vocal range: C3-A4

DAVEY (Male; ages 16-25): Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others. Vocal range: D3-A4

LES (Male; ages 9-12): Davey’s cheeky younger brother, is inspired by the freedom of the newsies and loves their independent lifestyle. A precocious and natural newsie, Les is an intuitive salesboy and a pint-sized charmer.Vocal range: Db3-Bb3

KATHERINE PLUMBER (Female; ages 18-25): An ambitious young reporter, works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Vocal range: A3-F5

JOSEPH PULITZER (Male; ages 35-50): A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line.Vocal range: C3-F4

MEDDA LARKIN (Female; ages 25-45): Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. Vocal range: F3-E5

SPOT CONLON (Male; ages 18-25): The proud leader of the Brooklyn newsies, boasts an intimidating reputation.

NEWSIES (Male; ages 15-25): Hard-working kids of New York City that go on strike for a livable wage.

WIESEL (Male; ages 35-60): Or “Weasel,” runs the distribution window for the World and knows most of the newsies by name.

OSCAR AND MORRIS DELANCEY (Male; ages 18-25): Tough brothers, who work at the distribution window for the World, take the side of the publishers in the strike and are known to use their fists to make a point.

SNYDER (Male; ages 35-60): The crooked and sinister warden of The Refuge, a filthy and horrible orphanage, is concerned only with catching enough kids to keep his government checks coming.

GOVERNOR TEDDY ROOSEVELT
 (Male; ages 45-65): A well-respected lifelong public servant, inspires Jack to stand up to Pulitzer.

ADULT ENSEMBLE
 (Male; ages 25+ & Female; ages 20+): The ensemble will cover the following roles: Seitz, Bunsen, Nunzio, Stage Manager, Mr. Jacobi, Mayor, Guards, Policeman, Hannah, Bowery Beauties, Nuns, etc.

The ATHE Conference 2018

This year, the ATHE Conference will be held in Boston from August 1-5. As opportunities to participate in the conference arise, they will be posted here. See important dates below:

May 15, 2018 Materials due to your Focus Group Conference Planner:
• Finalized session description for the printed program (no more than 30 words)
• Finalized session title
• Finalized listing of session participants, paper titles, and institutions for the printed program
June 4, 2018 Early Bird Registration ends
June 15, 2018 Conference registration required for all presenters

Internships 2018: SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre

High school and college students are welcome to apply.  Hands-on experience in the areas of your choice will be customized to fit your experience, interests and school requirements.

AUDITION: High Valley Arts 2018 – Willy Wonka the Musical & Oliver

High Valley Arts announces auditions for two major productions this year!

The first will be an adaptation of Willy Wonka the Musical! Auditions will be held on Tuesday, March 27 from 7-9pm and Thursday, March 29 from 7-9pm. You should sign up for an audition time Productions will be done outdoors from June 29 until July 14. For more information and access to the audition form, click here.

  • All auditioners for singing roles should bring 16 measures of a Broadway song in the style of the show.
  • You may bring accompaniment on an Ipad, IPod, CD, or hard copy music.
  • We will have a pianist available to play for you.
  • Auditioners will be ask to read from the script.
  • Those auditioning for dancing roles will learn a short dance segment.

AUDITION: Young Ambassadors 2018

An audition appointment for the 2018-2019 school year can be made starting after March 1 by contacting the Richards Building Music Office at (801) 422-2563.
Live auditions will be held March 26 – 30, 2018. Callbacks will be in the afternoon on March 30, 2018.

– Bring a current headshot and performance résumé to the audition. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early to complete an audition information card.
– All applicants should come ready to sing a ballad and an up-tempo selection. Each song should be about 16 bars in length. An accompanist will be provided.
– Please have your sheet music cut to the proper length and clearly marked.
– After your vocal audition, you will be taught several dance sequences from the Young Ambassador show. Please bring appropriate dance attire.
-Bring tennis shoes and character shoes (if possible) for the initial dance call.
