AUDITION: THE LITTLE MERMAID – Herriman Arts Council

Auditions for the 2017 Herriman Arts Council summer musical production of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” will be held Friday, March 17, 2017 from 7pm – 9pm and Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 9:00am – 1:00pm at Herriman City Hall, 13011 S. Pioneer St, Herriman, UT.

All roles are open. For this production, we are only auditioning those who are at least 14 years old, except for those auditioning for the role of “FLOUNDER”. Boys / Young Men 10 – 17 years old are open to audition for the role of “FLOUNDER”.

Once you’ve registered for an audition time, you will be sent an e-mail within 24-48 hours with an audition packet to complete and bring with you to auditions.

IMPORTANT: Prepare an audition song in the style of the show with 16 measures or approximately 30-45 seconds. An accompanist will be provided. No recordings or minus tracks please.

Call back auditions will be by invitation only Monday, March 20 – Wednesday, March 22nd.

The intent of the Herriman Arts Council is to cast approximately 30 men, women, and one boy / young man to play the following roles:

The Little Mermaid Character Descriptions

ARIEL
A mermaid and King Triton’s youngest teenaged daughter. She is obsessed with everything about the human world, and dreams of becoming a part of life above the water. Hardheaded, naive, and emotional, but also kind hearted.

PRINCE ERIC
A human monarch who has no interest of taking the crown. A handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more.

GRIMSBY
Prince Eric’s British guardian. Droll, stuffy, and constantly urging Eric towards his royal duties, specifically marriage.
Gender: Male

FLOUNDER
A fish and smitten with Ariel, his best friend. Rambunctious but cautious, fearful of the dangers that lurk in and above the water.

SCUTTLE
A disheveled seagull and expert in human artifacts. Loudmouthed, optimistic, and a bit ignorant, despite his supposed expertise.

KING TRITON
King of the Sea and Ariel’s father. Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature lurks a harried single father who will do anything to protect his daughters. The death of his wife has also given him an irrational fear of humans.

SEBASTIAN
A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is constantly distraught from keeping after Ariel. Despite his paranoia, he can’t bring himself to stand in Ariel’s way.

FLOTSAM
An eel and one of Ursula’s lackeys. Oily and spineless, he will say anything you want or need to hear.

An eel and one of Ursula’s lackeys. Oily and spineless, he will say anything you want or need to hear.

URSULA
The banished Sea Witch and sister of King Triton. Supposedly spurned at childhood, she will use whatever method necessary to steal the kingdom and claim it as her own. Malevolent, calculating, and deceptive.

CHEF LOUIS
The French palace chef, diabolical and violent. A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades, seafood in particular.

MERSISTERS – Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, and Allana
The mersisters are Ariel’s siblings and full of personality and sass. These girls should be able to create and play six distinctive characters. They should be strong singers and dancers.
Age: 16 to 30

PRINCESSES
The six princesses try everything they can to win the heart of Prince Eric. None of them possess the voice Eric is searching for, but they should have a lot of exaggeration and comedic timing to show off for him. They should be strong singers.

SAILORS, PILOT
The sailors are the crew of Prince Eric’s ship, including the Pilot of the ship. They are eager for adventure and ready to tackle a storm.

ENSEMBLE
Sea Creatures; Animals; Gulls; Maids; Chefs; Courtiers

Our intent is to fly (or swim) several of the characters, including Ariel, during the show. We are very excited to create a magical experience for our audiences and for those who are cast.

The show will be directed by veteran local actor of over 35 years, Stephen Kerr. Stephen was the director of six previous HAC productions, including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Stephen serves on the Board of Directors for the Utah Actors Association, has performed at various local and regional theaters, including Pioneer Theatre Company, The Egyptian Theatre, Desert Star Playhouse, and is a regular performer at Hale Centre Theatre including 2011 – 2017 productions of A Christmas Carol (Scrooge).

-Rehearsals begin Saturday, April 29, 2017 with individual voice rehearsals for the leads in April (individual times to be coordinated with vocal director)
-Monday – Thursday rehearsals will be from approximately 7pm to 10:00pm.
-Saturday rehearsals will be from approximately 9:00am to 1:00pm.
-“Tech Week” rehearsals begin June 26th-July 7th beginning as early as 6:00pm and as late as 11:00pm.
-There will be no rehearsal on Saturday, May 27th, Monday, May 29th, and Tuesday, July 4th.
